Springbank 17 year old Madeira Wood

£600.00

Distilled in November 2002 and finished for three years in ex-Madeira hogsheads after 14 years in rum and bourbon casks, this is one of Springbank’s most celebrated and sought-after limited releases. Unmistakably Campbeltown in character — coastal, oily and lightly peated — with the Madeira casks adding vivid notes of strawberry jam, caramelised ginger and salted caramel. Non-chill filtered, natural colour, and one of just 9,200 bottles worldwide. A serious whisky at a price the major retailers simply won’t match.

Description

Few distilleries in Scotland command the cult following that Springbank enjoys — and this release is a perfect example of why.
Matured for 14 years in ex-rum and ex-bourbon casks before a final three-year finish in ex-Madeira hogsheads , this is Springbank at its most creative and most collectible. The result is a whisky that remains unmistakably Campbeltown at its core — that signature coastal saltiness, subtle peat and oily richness — while the Madeira casks add a vivid, fruit-forward complexity that makes this one of the distillery’s most talked-about limited releases.
On the nose, sweet and jammy aromas of parma violets, boiled sweets and buttery tablet lead, with sticky ginger cake, strawberry jam and a tang of grapefruit and lemon sherbet. A familiar coastal saltiness runs throughout. On the palate, briny maritime characteristics follow through with light peat smoke, sticky toffee pudding, caramelised sugar and a spicy hint of black cracked pepper and tea leaves. The finish is nutty, smooth and gently woody.
Non-chill filtered and natural colour throughout — exactly as it should be.
With only 9,200 bottles released worldwide and Springbank’s production remaining deliberately small, expressions from limited wood series like this are becoming increasingly rare on the secondary market. A serious bottle for a serious collection.
