Few modern Macallans have vanished as quickly as A Night on Earth in Scotland. Introduced in autumn 2021 as the first in a planned annual series, it married a whisky maker’s memories of Hogmanay with packaging by a film-world illustrator — and within months of each release hitting shelves, they were empty again. Built for Hogmanay
The Macallan unveiled A Night on Earth in Scotland in October 2021, describing it as a single malt that tells the story of Scotland’s world-famous Hogmanay festivities — the warm, loud and thoroughly Scottish send-off to the old year on 31 December. The whisky was created by Sarah Burgess, The Macallan’s lead whisky maker, who drew on family memories of Hogmanay evenings: shortbread, soft fruit and the sweetness of a house full of people.
The packaging drew almost as much attention as the whisky. The Macallan commissioned Erica Dorn, the Japanese-French illustrator who worked as lead designer on Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs, and her colours tell the story themselves — red for merriment and good fortune, blue for a still winter’s night in Scotland, amber for warm butter and freshly baked shortbread. The bottle arrived in a multi-layered presentation box that made opening it part of the occasion.
Inside, the whisky was matured in sherry-seasoned American and European oak casks with a handful of American ex-bourbon barrels, delivering that rich, shortbread-like character.
One Story a Year
A Night on Earth was conceived as an annual tradition, with each edition celebrating how a different part of the world welcomes the new year. The Journey followed in December 2023, its packaging created with the Chinese artist Nini Sum and honouring the journeys millions of people make to reunite with family and friends. In 2024 the series travelled to Spain for A Night on Earth in Jerez de la Frontera, created with the artist Maria Melero.
The newest chapter is The First Light, the fourth release in the series, announced in January 2026. It looks to the first sunrise of the new year over New Zealand — one of the first places on earth to see the light — with notes of Manuka honey, berry compote and toasted marshmallow where the shortbread once was. Each edition has followed the same pattern: a limited run, a burst of attention as the new year turns, and empty shelves soon after.
So Where Did the 2022 Bottles Go?
That pattern is the answer. A Night on Earth was never part of the core range: every edition has been a limited release tied to a moment in the calendar, and demand for anything carrying Macallan’s name runs well ahead of supply. The Macallan no longer offers the 2022 edition for sale — its own page no longer shows a price at all. A few retailers still hold leftover bottles, typically asking well above what it cost at launch; one major UK retailer currently lists the 2022 release at around £160. When those bottles are gone, the series simply moves on to the next new year, and the 2022 becomes another bottle people ask about. The Macallans We Can Actually Sell

- Macallan 32 Year Old 1993 — Kingsbury, £1,300. The scarcity story here is even sharper than A Night on Earth’s: distilled in 1993, matured for thirty-two years, independently bottled by the highly regarded Kingsbury, and one of only 221 bottles ever produced. Expect rich dried fruit, polished oak and warming spice with a long, elegant finish. We have exactly one bottle.
- Macallan 18 Year Old — 2017 Release, £600. The classic sherry-oak Macallan at the age statement collectors ask about most: dried fruits, dark chocolate and warming spice, with eighteen years of patience behind it. Again, one bottle only.
